Scalp Micropigmentation for thinning hair, density & scalp coverage — soft, natural pigment designed to blend with your existing hair.
A natural-looking density solution, designed for women
Scalp micropigmentation for women is a non-surgical hair loss solution designed to reduce the appearance of thinning hair, visible scalp, part-line widening, & hair density loss. Using soft, natural pigment placement, SMP creates the illusion of fuller hair by reducing the contrast between the scalp & existing hair.
For women, the goal is usually not to create a shaved-head look. Instead, female scalp micropigmentation is used as a density treatment to make the hair appear thicker, fuller, & more even through thinning areas.
Women experience alopecia in many forms — traction alopecia from tight hairstyles, alopecia areata, post-chemotherapy hair loss, & scarring alopecia. SMP can effectively camouflage all of these conditions: working under existing hair to reduce contrast & visible thinning, or filling in patches with hand-placed pigment that blends naturally with the surrounding follicles.
At Lana SMP Studio, each treatment is customized around your hair color, skin tone, natural hair pattern, thinning areas, & overall style. The result is subtle, natural, & designed to blend seamlessly with your existing hair — meet Lana, your SMP artist & see how she approaches every session.

Diffuse Thinning
Ideal for
Diffuse thinning
Female pattern hair loss
Visible scalp
Thinning hair
Shedding-related density loss
Loss of fullness
Diffuse thinning is one of the most common reasons women choose scalp micropigmentation. Instead of hair loss appearing in one specific bald spot, thinning happens throughout the scalp, making the hair look less full & allowing more scalp to show through.
SMP for diffuse thinning uses gentle pigment placement between existing hairs to create the look of more density. By reducing the contrast between the scalp & hair, thinning areas can appear fuller without changing your natural hairstyle.
The goal is not to make the scalp look dark or heavy. It is to create a soft shadow effect that helps the hair appear thicker & more balanced in everyday lighting.
Part-Line Definition
Ideal for
Widening part lines
Visible scalp at the part
Thinning at the top
Female hair loss at the part
Scalp showing when styling
A widening part line can make thinning hair more noticeable, especially under bright lights, in photos, or when the hair is styled flat. Part-line SMP softens the contrast at the part & creates a fuller-looking finish.
This treatment places subtle pigment along & around the part line to reduce the appearance of scalp visibility. The result is a more natural, blended look that makes the part appear less wide & the surrounding hair appear denser.
It is a great option for women who want a low-maintenance alternative to daily powders, root sprays, or hair fibers.
Density Building
Ideal for
Thinning crowns
Mid-scalp thinning
Female pattern hair loss
Scalp visibility
Low-density areas
Thinning from aging, genetics, or stress
Density building with scalp micropigmentation is designed to reduce visible scalp throughout the crown, mid-scalp, & other thinning areas. Tiny pigment impressions are layered between existing hairs to create the appearance of fuller coverage.
For women with thinning through the top of the scalp or crown, density SMP helps the hair look more filled in without surgery, extensions, or daily concealers.
When blended correctly, the pigment sits visually beneath the hair & creates a natural shadow that gives the appearance of more volume — especially helpful for women who still have hair in the thinning area but want the scalp to be less noticeable.
Scar Camouflage
Ideal for
Surgical scars
Accident scars
Hair transplant scars
FUE scars
FUT scars
Scalp injury scars
Scalp micropigmentation can also conceal scars caused by accidents, surgery, hair transplants, or other trauma to the scalp. Scar tissue often creates areas where hair no longer grows naturally, making the scar more noticeable through the hair.
Scar camouflage SMP helps blend the scarred area into the surrounding scalp & hair pattern by carefully adding pigment to reduce contrast.
Because scar tissue can absorb pigment differently than normal skin, this treatment requires a careful, layered approach. The goal is to soften the appearance of the scar & make it less visible — especially when the hair is parted, pulled back, or styled around the area.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Lana specializes in women's density treatments & men's hairlines. Both require a delicate, detail-oriented approach — softening the contrast between scalp & hair for women, & designing natural, age-appropriate hairlines that frame the face for men. While the studio offers the full range of SMP services (full scalp, scar camouflage, beard SMP), these two specialties are where Lana's craft & experience truly shine.
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a highly detailed, non-surgical procedure in which tiny impressions of pigment are deposited into the upper layer of the scalp using ultra-fine, medical-grade needles. Each micro-dot replicates a hair follicle, creating the appearance of a closely-shaved head of hair, a sharper hairline, or added density in thinning areas. The results are extremely realistic &, when done correctly, undetectable.
Most clients experience minimal discomfort — far less intense than a traditional tattoo. The needles used for SMP are much finer than tattoo needles & only reach the upper dermal layer of the skin, so the sensation is more of a light, repetitive pinprick than a sharp pain. Some areas of the scalp can be slightly more sensitive than others, but the overwhelming majority of clients tolerate the procedure with no medication. We always check in with you throughout the session to make sure you're comfortable.
Yes. When done correctly, SMP is virtually undetectable. Each pigment dot is custom-mixed to match your skin tone & hair color, & dot size, spacing, & depth are layered to mimic the natural pattern of real follicles. The result blends in with your existing hair & looks like a freshly shaved head, a fuller hairline, or denser hair — not a tattoo.
No major downtime — you can return to normal activities within a few days. SMP is non-invasive, & most clients return to work the same day or the next day. Expect mild redness on the scalp for roughly 24–72 hours after each session, which fades quickly. Aftercare is simple: avoid heavy sweating, swimming, saunas, & direct sun exposure for about 4–5 days after each session to let the pigment settle properly.
Results typically last several years with occasional touch-ups to maintain sharpness. Once your full treatment is complete, results usually look fresh for 4 to 6 years before any noticeable fading occurs. The pigment will gradually lighten — not change color or turn an odd hue — at which point a quick single-session touch-up will restore everything to its original look. With proper aftercare & SPF protection, many clients go even longer between touch-ups.
Not at all. SMP works just as well for women — & is one of the few non-surgical treatments that can effectively address female pattern thinning, diffuse hair loss, alopecia, & post-surgical scarring. Because women typically experience thinning across a wider area rather than full pattern baldness, the technique is adjusted to add density beneath the existing hair rather than create a defined hairline. SMP is also effective across all skin tones & all hair colors.
Most clients require 2–3 sessions to complete their treatment, though some cases — especially extensive scarring or full scalp work — may need an additional touch-up. SMP is intentionally built up across multiple sessions because the scalp heals & absorbs pigment differently in each area, & layering in stages is what creates the natural, three-dimensional look. Sessions are typically spaced 10–28 days apart to allow the skin to fully heal & the pigment to settle before the next layer is applied. Your exact treatment plan will be confirmed during your free consultation.
Each session generally lasts between 2 & 4 hours, depending on the size of the treatment area & the goals for that session. The first session is usually the longest because we're laying the foundation — designing your hairline, mixing the custom pigment, & creating the base layer. Subsequent sessions are typically shorter as we refine density, blend, & add depth. You'll be in a comfortable chair throughout, free to listen to music, watch something, or just relax.
SMP is a great fit for most adults experiencing hair loss, thinning, or scarring. It works for all skin tones & all hair colors, & there are no requirements for how much existing hair you have. The best way to know for sure is to book a free consultation — we'll review your scalp, discuss your goals, & design a treatment plan tailored to you.
Yes — SMP is one of the most effective non-surgical options for camouflaging the visual appearance of alopecia. We work with clients experiencing alopecia areata (patchy autoimmune hair loss), traction alopecia (often from tight hairstyles), scarring alopecia, & hair loss from chemotherapy or other medical treatment. The technique is adjusted based on the type & pattern of loss — patches are blended into surrounding follicles, while diffuse thinning is addressed with density-building. Results are typically immediate & undetectable.
For clients getting a full hairline restoration or full scalp treatment, we recommend keeping the hair short — a buzz cut or close shave — for the most balanced, natural look. For clients getting a density treatment to address thinning hair, you can keep your hair at its current length; the pigment is placed underneath the existing hair to reduce the contrast between scalp & follicles, making the hair appear fuller. Your artist will help you choose the best style for your hair pattern during your consultation.
Gray hair is not a problem. We use a custom-mixed, gray-scale pigment that's diluted to blend seamlessly with your natural tone. When hair is kept short, even gray hair appears darker at the root because the follicle itself contains more pigment beneath the skin than the visible strand. This is why correctly-shaded SMP dots blend naturally into gray, white, or salt-&-pepper hair without looking out of place.
SMP is one of the most effective treatments available for camouflaging hair transplant scars — both linear FUT strip scars & the smaller dot scars from FUE procedures. By depositing pigment into & around the scar tissue, we replicate the surrounding follicle pattern & dramatically reduce the visibility of the scar. SMP can also be used to add density behind a transplant that didn't yield the fullness you were hoping for, giving the final result a more natural, complete look.
SMP pricing is fully customized to your specific needs — the size of the treatment area, the extent of hair loss, scar coverage, & the number of sessions required. Because every client is different, the most accurate way to get a quote is to schedule a free consultation, where we'll measure your treatment area in person & walk you through a customized plan. Either way, there's no obligation & no pressure.
